Theft, Intrigue...Pottery

This
story in The Times, tells the story of the theft, recovery (and subsequent lack of interest) for an Krater vase by Euphronios. The piece has been at the Met for a number of years. I remember it well.

The story is filled with Thieves, Corrupt Art Dealers, Bumbling Cops (literally) and well meaning Museums. The stuff James Bond movies are made of. Only less interesting...Just kidding.

I have to admit that I am a sucker for the Greeks. When I was an undergrad, I was thoroughly obsessed with them. Story, technique and form all together. Beautiful stuff

The story is documented in the new book “The Lost Chalice: The Epic Hunt for a Priceless Masterpiece,”By Vernon Silver
