Engine Down

Thanks to Carole Epp for this one.
This is work by Clint Neufeld, an artist I have never heard of, but I am floored by.
These are exactly what they look like. Perfectly made engines and other mechanical parts of clay. I really have nothing to add, because I am so stunned.
I wish I could get to this show. It is at the Two Rivers Gallery 725 Civic Plaza. Prince George, BC. and is up until July 3rd.

Frank Gehry Tries His Hand at Curating a Ceramics Exhibition

0727geceram.jpg
Outside of architecture, Frank Gehry has occasionally dabbled in other things, like designing chairs, making jewelry for Tiffany's, and acting as an unpaid spokesmodel for those "F*&k Frank Gehry" shirts from a few years back. Now he can add "curator" to his resume, as this weekend marked the opening of his exhibition, "Frank Gehry Selects: A Group Show of Ceramics" at the Frank Lloyd Gallery in Santa Barbara, California. Gehry's interest in ceramics predates his focused involvement in architecture, starting when he took a class in college and his professor, the artist Glen Lukens, recognized his talent and enthusiasm for building and design. Since then, and in apparent honor of Lukens, Gehry has remained a collector and champion of ceramics, some of his collection (and pieces of his own work) now finding its way into this exhibition that will run until August 21st. Here's a bit:
This exhibition grew out of a conversation between Frank Lloyd and Frank Gehry. It started as a casual idea, and grew into an exhibition -- works chosen by Gehry, by people that he knows and respects. It marks an opportunity to see a variety of approaches to ceramic art, in a selection by a world-class architect. The exhibit also demonstrates, once again, the integration of the ceramic arts into the larger world of Southern California art and architecture.
For more reading, here's the LA Times talking to both Lloyd and Gehry about the exhibition.

NYC Clay People, Clear your Calenders

If you are in NYC tonight, the you must make your way over to Greenwich House Pottery.
Tonight is the start of their 100th anniversary celebration and there is something tres tool to see. Super friends of Slipcast Andy Brayman and Ayumi Horie have put together a collaborative installation. "Who Lives in Greenwich Village--It draws inspiration from the Manahatta Project (http://themannahattaproject.org/).  The artists superimposed images of native plants and animals on the Greenwich Village street grid, and each block is its own little segment. As you can see from the images it looks fantastic.

Ayumi and Andy also made these awesome platters too .

There is also another show,  New Amsterdam at 400: A Celebration of Dutch Ceramics, celebrating the fourth century mark of Dutch ceramic influence on New York City. As the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam was established in September 1609, this exhibition uniquely connects Greenwich House Pottery's own anniversary with the cultural heritage of Dutch settlement in New York City.

It can all be seen at 16 Jones St between Bleecker and West 4th.

Be there. There is an artist's talk at 5:30 and the big event is at 6 Wine, hors d'oeuvres and jazz, $25 admission which  goes to the Pottery.
